Kelly Morrison Lee leads the organization’s Tax Controversy practice. Kelly helps clients navigate disputes with the Internal Revenue Service and prepare for tax transactions, advising on the complexities of federal tax administration and procedure. Her experience includes IRS examinations, administrative appeals, information reporting and withholding requirements, closing agreements, private letter rulings, interest abatement and penalty relief, collection alternatives, identity theft and identity verification and statutes of limitation issues.
She also consults on litigation and investigation matters, including tax-related disputes analysis of transaction-related tax exposures, shareholder disputes and accountants’ liability matters. Kelly provides guidance on professional responsibility obligations involving IRS Circular 230, AICPA standards and the ABA Model Rules.
Kelly has a diverse background that includes practicing with the federal government in Washington, D.C., where she built experience and connections handling regulatory guidance projects, litigation, government oversight investigations and strategic matters.
She held leadership positions for the IRS Chief Counsel and the IRS Commissioner, including serving as special counsel to the National Taxpayer Advocate and senior advisor to the Chief Tax Compliance Officer. In these roles, Kelly focused on collaborative, cross-functional models and developed programs to strengthen client service and stakeholder engagement.
